Scientists from Monash University (Australia) have found that people suffering from constipation are more than twice as likely to develop cardiovascular pathologies. Research results It was published In American Journal of Physiology (AJP) – Cardiac and Circulatory Physiology.
408,354 people participated in the research. They gave the scientists access to their medical records and told them how often they had problems with bowel movements.
Subsequent follow-up of the volunteers showed that people with persistent constipation had more than twice the risk of serious cardiovascular disease, such as heart failure, stroke or heart attack, compared with other participants.
Additional analyzes also found that people with constipation and hypertension were the most vulnerable. People with both conditions were 34% more likely to develop heart disease than people with high blood pressure alone.
According to experts, constipation affects approximately 14% of the world’s population and is most common in the elderly and women.
