Scientist explained why an effective treatment for brain cancer has not yet been created 22:40

Immunotherapy could revolutionize the treatment of glioblastoma brain tumor. So far this has been hampered by side effects, lack of drug delivery systems to the brain, the nature of the tumor, and lack of funding. A scientist from Cardiff University talked about this Speech.

Glioblastoma is the most common and most dangerous form of brain cancer. Approximately 150 thousand new cases are recorded worldwide every year. The average life expectancy after diagnosis is 12 to 15 months. And only 6.9% of patients survive more than five years. The tumor also causes headaches, seizures, cognitive and personality changes, and neurological disorders.

Standard treatments for glioblastoma, which include surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy, are usually only temporarily effective. Glioblastoma is resistant to these methods due to its ability to suppress antitumor immunity. There is also a blood-brain barrier that prevents drugs from reaching the brain.

Scientists believe the solution may be immunotherapy, which stimulates the immune system to fight cancer cells. However, not every type of cancer is suitable for immunotherapy. The fact is that it targets specific target molecules. However, glioblastoma mutates rapidly and its targets change. Therefore, the tumor becomes resistant to immunotherapy.

The second concern is immune-related side effects such as organ inflammation and brain swelling. The method of drug delivery for immunotherapy is also important: Scientists are now trying to develop delivery systems through blood or cerebrospinal fluid. Research shows that such methods are possible and may help avoid brain surgery.

Immunotherapy may be the best treatment option for patients with glioblastoma. Clement believes that a lack of funding is hindering the region’s development process. But investment in immunotherapy is growing rapidly and a turning point in brain cancer treatment can be expected soon.

Previous scientists connected Fatty acids that lower the risk of 19 types of cancer.
