Scientists from Baylor University found that extending sleep by 46 minutes at night improved overall well-being, gratitude, well-being, stress tolerance and prosocial behavior. Research results It was published In Journal of Positive Psychology (JPP).
In a study of 90 teenagers, researchers analyzed the impact of sleep patterns on mental and social health. Participants were randomly divided into three groups: late, early, and optimal bedtime. The researchers then observed how sleeping longer affected the volunteers’ mental and physical health.
The results showed that increasing sleep by an average of 46 minutes per day led to increased stress tolerance, gratitude, and life satisfaction. Participants who reduced their sleep time by 37 minutes experienced worse mood, increased susceptibility to stress, and increased feelings of dissatisfaction.
Researchers have also found that quality sleep supports prosocial behavior. Participants who slept well were more likely to express gratitude and behaved more positively towards others. These findings are consistent with an additional study of 2,837 adults conducted at Baylor University. It showed that people with normal sleep duration (seven to nine hours) were 7 to 45 percent more likely to participate in charity work.
