Experts from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the British Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) have estimated the number of poor people worldwide. The research was published in the official gazette website OPHI.
According to the report, 1.1 billion people in the world live in poverty. Moreover, 40% of them (455 million people) live in countries affected by wars, instability and/or low levels of peace.
“We found that poverty levels are much higher in conflict-affected areas. According to the Uppsala Conflict Data Programme, more than one in three people (34.8%) in countries at war are poor, compared to one in nine (10.9%) in countries not affected by conflict. The report states .
Scientists added that more than half of the 1.1 billion poor people (584 million) are children under the age of 18. Almost a third (27.9%) worldwide live in poverty, compared to 13.5% of adults.
In addition, the vast majority of the poor lack sanitation services (828 million), housing (886 million) or cooking fuel (998 million).
