Pediatric dentist and orthodontist Konstantin Krylov told socialbites.ca that an incorrect bite can cause curvature of the child’s spine.
“From the first day of life, the formation of pathological bite is negatively affected by errors during breastfeeding, excessive use of the pacifier and other factors,” the expert said.
At the same time, children often develop a violation of nasal breathing: in this case, the tongue, which in the normal position should be pressed against the palate, falls down, which further aggravates orthodontic problems.
“When we breathe, air passes through the nose, down the oropharynx and finally into the lungs. If the baby cannot breathe properly, if there is allergic rhinitis or adenoiditis, the body adapts to this. The tone of the tongue decreases and the maxillofacial muscles relax, allowing the mouth to open slightly,” Krylov said.
But another problem arises: when the tongue drops, the airways in the oropharynx area are blocked. The body begins to create a new protective mechanism: extension occurs, or, as people call it, the syndrome of “computer neck”. In this position, the head is always slightly extended forward, because this way you can take a deeper breath.
“Due to this, the entire musculoskeletal system is restructured: the weight of the head puts a load on the cervical spine. The stronger the forward bend, the greater the imbalance. To compensate for this, bends in the chest appear, the lower back muscles are constantly tense, and the abdominal muscles, on the contrary, relax,” the doctor explained.
As a result, the child develops an S-shaped posture.
Incorrect tongue position is not the only reason for the development of malocclusion. However, all problems that cause narrowing of the airways automatically cause changes in the musculoskeletal system.
That is why it is important to monitor the child’s health from childhood, the expert adds. The bite is not inherited from parents – the baby may simply have a genetic predisposition. If there are no provoking factors, it will not develop, he concluded.
