Previous research has shown that political conservatism is associated with feelings of happiness and meaning in life. In a new study, scientists found that liberals have an advantage: They live more interesting and richer lives. The results are published here: Personality Magazine.
Psychologists analyzed data from thousands of people in the United States and South Korea who independently rated their political leanings as conservative or liberal, without specifying which party they voted for.
The analysis confirmed the previously identified link between conservatism, meaning in life (the opportunity to change the world and be meaningful), and happiness (the number of “good” days and positive emotions). But they also found, for the first time, that liberals were more likely to report psychologically rich lives. This means they were more likely to have new experiences and be open to learning.
