Doctor explains how to reduce salt intake Doctor Girenko: The main reason for excess salt in the diet is the consumption of ready-made foods 07:54

Even foods prepared without salt contain a lot of salt, so it is important to pay attention to their composition and cook at home more often. Ekaterina Girenko, a gastroenterologist at the Fomina Clinic network in Krasnodar, told socialbites.ca.

“Most of the sodium in the average person’s diet comes from packaged and ready-made foods. The paradox is that even unsalted ketchup, bread and breakfast cereals can be sources of sodium. When choosing between two similar products, it would be better to choose the one with a low salt label on the packaging. It is also better to prefer foods made from fresh produce rather than ready-made products. Spices and citrus juices can make homemade food more delicious,” the doctor explained.

Girenko emphasized that there is no need to completely exclude ready-made foods from the diet. But we should try to reduce its share. You should also pay attention to the composition of the finished products in the restaurant. It is better to choose vegetables in the menu. They and fruits should be added to each meal.

“Eating fresh products contains not only less salt, but also more nutrients. Therefore, for example, instead of porridge, which only needs to be poured with boiling water, it is better to choose porridge that has been cooked for a long time. You can also replace ready-made sauces with homemade ones. Their preparation does not always take much time: just mix Greek yogurt with lemon juice and spices to dress the salad,” Girenko advised.

Formerly a doctor It has been saidIt has been revealed that excess salt in the diet increases the risk of stomach cancer.
