Russian scientists have developed a designer drug for cancer treatment using nanoparticles.

Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University together with the Russian Scientific Center for Radiological and Surgical Technologies named after Academician AM. Granova is working on a domestic platform technology for combined radiotherapy of oncological diseases. This was reported to socialbites.ca in the press service of the program “Priority 2030” of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia.

It involves administering a radioactive isotope with therapeutic effect directly to a cancerous tumor. Nanoparticles are used as a delivery system. This approach allows you to effectively affect the tumor and not expose the whole body to radiation.

With this in mind, St. Petersburg are creating a platform technology for the creation of radiopharmaceuticals that can be adapted to existing production facilities based on relevant medical institutions.

“The uniqueness of our technology lies in the fact that it is platform-based and allows it to treat a wide class of diseases: based on the therapeutic task, it is possible to replace not only the radioactive isotope itself, but also the nanoparticle it is in. A researcher in the laboratory of Biomedical Systems and Biotechnology told socialbites.ca Said the Institute SPbPU Albert Muslimov microencapsulation and controlled delivery of biologically active compounds.

Platform technology means you can quickly assemble the pharmaceutical product required for a given task: for both therapeutic and diagnostic purposes. At the same time, this technology is potentially effective not only for cancer treatment, but even for synovitis (arthritis).

According to researchers, there is no such development in Russia. Therefore, the creation of a domestic radiopharmaceutical will make it possible to make the drug several times cheaper than imported analogues.
