WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on his social media page that two tanks belonging to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) attacked a convoy led by the World Health Organization (WHO).
According to him, the incident occurred on September 14, when a WHO convoy was returning from a mission in the northern part of the Gaza Strip. The cars encountered Israeli tanks after obtaining permission to pass and passed a checkpoint.
“The tanks opened fire close to the convoy. Luckily no one was injured. This is unacceptable,” Ghebreyesus wrote.
On September 9, the Israeli army detained a UN convoy in the northern Gaza Strip after receiving information about the presence of suspects in the convoy. The Israel Defense Forces press service explained that we are talking about a convoy of vehicles for the rotation of UN personnel. The UN said that its personnel went north to start a vaccination campaign. The convoy was released the next day.
The situation in the Middle East got worse On October 7, thousands of armed Hamas supporters entered Israel from the Gaza Strip. In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared the country at war.
The aim of Israel’s intervention operation was to repel the attack, free more than 200 hostages, including foreigners, and destroy Hamas.
