German scientists from Ruhr-University Bochum found that reducing the time spent using a smartphone increases job satisfaction. The study was published in the scientific journal magazine Acta Psychologica (ActPsy).
Previous research has shown that people spend, on average, three hours and 15 minutes a day looking at their phones.
In the new study, experts recruited four groups of participants from different professions. The first group was instructed to reduce their daily smartphone use by one hour. The second had to exercise for at least 30 minutes every day. The third group completed both tasks, and the fourth group was a control group that was not given any instructions.
All participants provided information about their well-being, both work-related and mental health-related, by completing online surveys before, immediately after and two weeks after the testing period.
The researchers found that job satisfaction and motivation, work-life balance, and mental health improved significantly in the reduced screen time group and the combined group.
Moreover, feelings of work overload and symptoms of smartphone addiction were significantly reduced. All interventions resulted in reduced depressive symptoms and increased participants’ sense of control over their lives.
Earlier scientists I learnedJust one cell phone call per week was linked to a higher risk of heart disease, a study found.
