Scientists from the University of California College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources (CAHNR) found that blackcurrant supplements help prevent bone loss in women over the age of 45. Research results It was published In Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry (JNB).
The study involved women aged 45 to 60 (postmenopausal). In the first phase, scientists assessed the subjects’ bone mineral density. They were then divided into two groups to receive either a placebo or capsules containing dried, crushed currants every day for six months. Each capsule weighed 392 milligrams.
After the experimental period, the participants’ bone strength was measured again. The results showed that the total bone mineral density increased in women who took blackcurrant capsules. Scientists found that the supplement helped reduce the levels of proteins called interleukin-1 beta and RANKL. The fact is that interleukin-1 beta stimulates the expression of RANKL, which causes bone resorption – the resorption of bone tissue under the influence of osteoclasts (cells that “dissolve” minerals).
The researchers identified a total of four proteins that were overexpressed in the supplement group, which the scientists say could serve as potential biomarkers for the observed changes in bone density.
