Archaeologists in Egypt have unearthed a rare bronze sword while exploring ancient barracks in the northwestern Nile River Delta. The find has been reported to authorities website Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities (MOTA) of the Republic.
According to scientists, the blade is covered with hieroglyphs depicting the name of Pharaoh Ramesses II, who reigned from 1279 to 1213 BC.
The sword was found in a small room near the entrance to the barracks, indicating that the weapon was for combat purposes and not decorative. Researchers believe that the sword was presented to a high-ranking officer as a royal reward in exchange for certain privileges.
In the barracks complex, warehouses used to store grain and ovens used to prepare bread were unearthed. Numerous cow burials were also found at the site. In ancient Egypt, cows were revered as sacred animals and symbolized abundance and prosperity.
According to scientists, the ancient Egyptian military garrison was well equipped and was intended to protect the state from the invasion of the Libyans.
