Natalia Bosha, an ophthalmologist at the European Medical Center (EMC), told socialbites.ca that in older people who normally have signs of atherosclerosis or take blood thinners, hemorrhages in the eye can occur spontaneously about once every six months.
“But if you are an absolutely healthy person or if bleeding begins to occur regularly, this is also a reason to be careful. If bleeding occurs in the eye for the first time while you are in perfect health and similar symptoms occur frequently, you should immediately consult an ophthalmologist,” the doctor said.
In addition, if there is discharge from the eyes, pain, visual disturbances, or bleeding in a large area such as “blood filled eyes”, a doctor should be consulted.
“Some people believe that eye bleeding may indicate glaucoma. However, in its initial stages, glaucoma rarely causes unpleasant or visible changes in the eye. The exception is an acute glaucoma attack, in which severe pain develops, a sharp deterioration in vision and redness of the eyes. But even in this case, there is no direct connection between hemorrhages and the development of glaucoma,” the doctor said.
According to him, this condition is often caused by vascular pathologies. For example, due to high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, vasculitis (inflammation of blood vessels), injuries, blood thinners and vitamin C deficiency, the vessels in the eye can burst.
