Scientists from the Shizuoka Central Research Institute (Japan) found that matcha green tea powder improves sleep and social skills in the elderly. Research results It was published In the journal PLOS One.
Researchers analyzed the effects of matcha green tea (powdered green tea made from the Camellia sinensis plant) on cognitive function and sleep quality in 99 older adults. 64 volunteers experienced a subjective decline in cognitive function, manifested by confusion or memory loss. Another 35 had mild cognitive impairment, with their memory and thinking working worse than their peers.
The researchers divided the volunteers into two groups, taking capsules containing two grams of matcha powder or a placebo per day. Twelve months after the start of the experiment, the researchers analyzed changes in cognitive function and sleep quality.
The results showed that drinking powdered tea was associated with significant improvements in the volunteers’ social skills; they became better at perceiving the psychological state of others and regulating their behavior accordingly. Participants who took the matcha capsules also scored higher on the sleep quality index.
