New longevity gene could be target of anti-aging drugs 09/04/2024, 22:25

Scientists have found a new gene associated with longevity and protection of cells against oxidative stress. The results of the research were published in the journal Nature Communication.

Previous studies have shown that FOXO molecules control the activity of genes associated with longevity. In the new study, scientists identified 10 genes controlled by FOXO. As it turned out, the OSER1 gene makes the biggest contribution to life expectancy.

In experiments, a change in its activity led to increased or decreased life expectancy in fruit flies, nematodes and silkworms. Initial results showed that OSER1 plays a role in combating oxidative stress, which is the deterioration of cell function due to exposure to reactive oxygen species.

Because the gene is present in different animals, the researchers conclude that their results are applicable to humans (the gene is already known to be present in humans). In the future, OSER1 could become a target for life-extending drugs.

“We are currently focused on unraveling the role of OSER1 in humans, but this is challenging as very little research has been published on this topic to date. Our study shows for the first time that OSER1 is an important regulator of aging and longevity. We hope to provide insights into specific age-related diseases and aging processes affected by OSER1 in the future,” the scientists said.
