American researchers have recorded the first case of a herring shark falling victim to a larger marine creature. This was reported by NBC News.
In October 2020, Arizona State University staff captured a pregnant herring shark, attached two tracking sensors to it, and released it back into the sea to study its behavior. But a few months later, one of the sensors turned up off the coast of Bermuda.
Analysis of data from the tag showed the shark was in unusual conditions for its species. “Everything pointed to it being eaten,” researcher Brooke Anderson said. Scientists found the sensor moving inside the stomach of an unknown marine animal before it surfaced.
According to scientists, the pregnant herring shark may have been attacked by a great white shark or a mako shark, with other predators excluded due to their biology.
“We need to continue to track these sharks with sensors to understand how often these events are occurring,” Anderson added, noting the importance of studying the impact of such attacks on the herring shark population.
Thus, for the first time, scientists recorded the possibility of sharks eating each other.
Previously on Primorye Shark was attacked fishermen and stole their catch.
