There is a shortage of qualified personnel at the mid-level and above in IT, but the qualification requirements for employees continue to change and grow, Kirill Mokevnin, co-founder of online programming school Hexlet, told socialbites.ca.
“The demand for skilled workers in development, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, data analytics and product management significantly exceeds supply, and this is not the limit. Of course, the personnel shortage affects junior specialists less – here the supply remains high, so the ‘youngsters’ need to make maximum efforts and constantly learn in order to gain a foothold in the company and continue to grow,” he explained.
At the same time, a junior specialist needs to work for about one to one and a half years to advance to the next level. During this time, the company should help the employee adapt and encourage learning. Companies currently offer their employees salary increases if they study new technologies. In this way, companies try to gain employee loyalty and prevent turnover.
“The rapid development of technology creates a situation where specialized training is rapidly becoming obsolete. As a result, there is a need for constant retraining and upgrading of skills. Therefore, specialists in the labor market are forced to constantly learn new things. The market places high requirements on the qualifications of applicants, while vacancies are often targeted at narrow-profile specialists with in-depth knowledge, which reduces the group of suitable candidates,” Mokevnin said.
Also, the number of IT companies and startups is increasing, which leads to increased competition for talent in the labor market. Now the niche of finding promising IT specialists has become a whole industry – Talent Tech, where some companies help find and develop talented IT specialists in other companies.
“In the autumn, the personnel shortage may become even more acute. Business activity will increase and companies will start launching new projects. In a situation of increasing shortage, companies will fight even more actively for talented and experienced specialists who can solve complex problems.”
