British scientists from University College London have identified the most common and serious symptoms of a long-term coronavirus infection. They turned out to be pain in various parts of the body. The study was published in the scientific journal magazine Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine (JRSM).
The team analyzed data from more than 1,000 patients who had COVID-19 between 2020 and 2022. More than a quarter (26.5%) complained of headaches, joint pain, and abdominal pain.
Other common symptoms of long Covid were neuropsychological problems such as anxiety and depression (18.4%), fatigue (14.3%) and dyspnea (difficulty breathing) (7.4%).
The analysis showed that the intensity of symptoms, particularly pain, increased by an average of 3.3% each month since the disease was diagnosed.
The study confirmed that older people have much more intense symptoms.
The researchers called for continued support for prolonged hospitalizations due to COVID-19 and the development of treatment strategies that prioritize pain management as well as other common symptoms such as neuropsychological issues and fatigue.
