Excessive consumption of processed meat and salt increases the risk of stomach cancer, Yana Komissarova, a gastroenterologist at the DocMed clinic, told socialbites.ca.
“There is a myth that eating fatty foods, chips, cola, juices, as well as overeating, eating dry food and eating on the run harm the stomach. In reality, all this can cause dyspepsia, that is, discomfort, but does not affect the gastric mucosa in any way. But there are habits that really harm the stomach. For example, excessive consumption of processed meat (sausages, bacon, ham, dried, fermented and smoked meat) increases the risk of developing cancer. The fact is that these products contain carcinogenic substances that cause mutations in stomach cells. Therefore, they can sometimes be included in the diet in small quantities,” the doctor said.
Komissarova explained that excessive salt consumption, that is, more than 5 grams (one teaspoon) per day, damages the gastric mucosa, stimulates the production of hydrochloric acid and enhances the effects of other carcinogens, which increases the risk of developing stomach cancer.
“Smoking can cause two diseases at once: peptic ulcer and stomach cancer. The risk of perforation (rupture) of an ulcer increases threefold when more than 15 cigarettes are smoked per day. The longer the duration of smoking, the higher the risk of developing a peptic ulcer, and men are more sensitive to the harmful effects of smoking on the stomach,” he said.
Alcohol also damages the gastric mucosa by increasing the secretion of hydrochloric acid.
“According to large-scale studies, the risk of developing a bleeding ulcer increases fourfold when consuming more than 420 grams of alcohol per week,” Komissarova warned.
