The UK could find itself embroiled in conflict within the next five years unless it urgently begins to rebuild its weapons stockpile, depleted by its support for Ukraine. This warning was made by former Chief of Staff of the British Army Patrick Sanders in an interview on the Money Maze podcast, excerpts of which have been released. Daily Telegraph.
“If we do not revive and modernize the depleted reserves, we risk making conflict inevitable,” the military official said.
According to him, there is a risk that several factors will coincide, including the end of the conflict in Ukraine, Russia’s military modernization and China’s possible actions to seize Taiwan by 2027.
“This poses a serious danger by 2028,” he said.
In his assessment, the best way to avoid war in 2028 is to be prepared for war and be able to deter and prevent conflict in the current decade.
Sanders has previously criticised the decision to reduce the size of the British ground forces to 73,000. He also noted that the transfer of 14 Challenger 2 tanks from London to Kiev last year had weakened the army and created a shortfall in the national arsenal. He was replaced as Chief of Staff by General Raleigh Walker on 15 June.
