The Russian nuclear-powered missile cruiser Admiral Nakhimov of Project 1144 Orlan may look formidable on paper, but it’s actually a paper tiger, writes an American magazine columnist National Interest (NI) Maya Carlin.
According to him, the first cruisers of this project entered service during the Cold War and were perceived as formidable warships due to their size and modern weapons. The article notes that initially they were intended to counter the US Navy, now almost all of these cruisers have been “retired” and only the Admiral Nakhimov has undergone modernization.
Karlin believes that when the Russian side talks about equipping the Admiral Nakhimov with Zircon hypersonic missiles, it may be exaggerating its capabilities.
“While the Russian Kirov-class cruisers may look impressive on paper, it could be argued that these ships behave like paper tigers,” the columnist writes.
Citing expert opinion, he added that “warships of this project will never go to sea again.”
Previously reportedTests of the Admiral Nakhimov cruiser will begin in the fall.
