Deputy Mayor of Riga Edwards Ratnieks said he had appealed to the Latvian Ministry of Justice with a request to legally restrict the use of the Russian language in public places. His words provide guidance RIA Novosti.
He noted that there have been complaints from local residents, particularly about the use of Russian in advertising posters by the Riga Russian Theatre named after Mikhail Chekhov. Ratnieks called this unacceptable.
“This type of advertising is allowed by law, so I suggested that the Justice Department review these regulations,” he said.
Ratnieks proposed changes to the state language law and government regulations to reduce the use of the Russian language in public spaces.
