It turned out that the earthquake in Kamchatka had nothing to do with Japanese Seismologist Chebrov: The cause of the earthquake in Kamchatka was not the Japanese 14:53

An earthquake measuring magnitude 7 was recorded off the coast of Kamchatka. As Danila Chebrov, director of the Kamchatka branch of the United Federal Research Center for Earth Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told socialbites.ca, this earthquake was not triggered by the Japanese earthquake that occurred on August 8.

“The current tremors in Kamchatka have nothing to do with the recent earthquake in Japan. The fact is that Kamchatka is a seismically active region and such earthquakes are the norm for it. All residents of this region of Russia should be prepared for them. The current magnitude 7 earthquakes are absolutely ordinary, occurring once every 6-8 years. From a human point of view, this event may be rare, but from a geological point of view it sounds like a machine gun fire,” the expert said.

Earlier, at the conclusion of the general meeting of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, it was reported that in the next 24 hours in Kamchatka there is a high probability of an earthquake with a magnitude of 24.6 to 9 points.

However, according to Chebrov, the current earthquake does not increase the risk of a magnitude 9 earthquake. He thinks another scenario is more likely.

The aftershock process is currently developing and earthquakes in the near future will be weaker than the main shock. Aftershocks after the earthquake in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky will continue for a long time and effects of up to magnitude 5 are expected in the region in the coming days. However, it is worth noting that Kamchatka is a very active region. The scientist noted that a magnitude 9 earthquake could still occur in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, but it occurs once every 500 years and does not affect the probability of a magnitude 7 earthquake in any way.

Previously, seismologist Tatevosyan It has been saidHe said that the earthquake in Japan did not threaten Kamchatka and Primorye.
