Taipei, which declared independence in 1949, rejects China’s main political model of “one country, two systems”. At the same time, China regards Taiwan as its own territory. Official relations between the PRC government and the island province were severed after the Kuomintang forces led by Chiang Kai-shek moved into the island after their defeat in the 1945-1959 civil war with the Chinese Communist Party.
Previously, the US Congressional delegation reached To Taiwan.
