Scientists analyzed data from 51,000 people across three large studies. This allowed them to develop the most accurate clock to date for estimating biological age. The results were published in the journal Nature Medicine.
Age is the most important risk factor for many diseases, but people of the same age can be very different biologically.
In a new study, scientists analyzed nearly 3,000 proteins in the blood of patients in the U.K. Based on their data, they created a machine learning model that used 204 proteins to estimate a person’s biological age.
The new tool was able to accurately estimate the biological age of participants in two large studies in China and Finland, which is interesting because people in these countries differ from the British in both genetics and lifestyle.
The study also showed that biological age can differ from chronological age by about 12 years. The further ahead biological age is, the worse health indicators are. For example, grip strength and other measures of muscle strength, bone density, kidney health, brain function and telomere length are lower. Biological age also accurately predicted the risk of death and 18 major diseases, including dementia, heart disease, liver and kidney disease and various types of cancer.
The accuracy of the new biological clock surpasses all previous devices. Given the ever-decreasing cost of blood protein testing, it is possible that the new test will be widely used in the future. Scientists have concluded that it will help people live longer and stay healthy.
Previously was named The most common heart disease among Russians.
