A dissolvable patch containing microneedles can improve the restoration of periodontal tissue (tissues surrounding the tooth), as demonstrated in a study published in the journal Dentistry. Med-X.
Periodontitis, or gum inflammation, occurs when the composition of the bacterial community in the mouth is disrupted. Chronic inflammation occurs, which prevents the bacteria from getting rid of them and also causes damage to healthy tissue. Current treatments typically only aim to kill the bacteria, not control the inflammation.
In previous studies, scientists found that the antibiotic Azithromycin not only suppresses bacterial growth but also “calms” inflammatory immune cells. They developed a dissolvable microneedle patch loaded with microparticles to deliver Azithromycin locally and painlessly to gum tissue.
Experiments showed that microneedles enabled the antibiotic to penetrate the periodontium. At the same time, levels of inflammatory cytokine molecules were reduced and bacterial growth was suppressed. Tissue healing and gingival bone regeneration were also improved.
Previous doctors named symptoms of oral cancer.
