Folate (folic acid) is a B vitamin that is essential for cell growth and development. Numerous studies have shown it to be effective in preventing birth defects. This vitamin is found in foods such as green leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, yeast, liver, honey, grains, and legumes.
Scientists noted that many people know about the beneficial properties of folic acid, so vitamin supplements based on it are actively sold in pharmacies and online stores. To find out if there are any undesirable effects from consuming this vitamin, scientists conducted an experiment on mice.
When folate was restricted, the researchers observed a slowdown in processes associated with the growth and creation of new cells, but they also found an increase in metabolic flexibility in the animals. The scientists also found that mice on a low-folate diet stayed gray longer than control animals that received the vitamin in their diet.
According to the researchers, improved metabolism is associated with healthier aging. The scientists emphasized that active folic acid intake is critical for growth and development in early life. However, limiting dietary folate later in life may improve metabolic health and aid longevity.
