New research has revealed that several brands of condoms and lubricants “contain alarming levels of the toxic ‘forever chemical’ PFAS.” As the article puts it MammovementWe are specifically talking about the brands Trojan and KY Jelly.
The test, carried out by consumer advocacy group Mamavation, comes as researchers discover that human skin absorbs much more of these chemicals than previously thought.
The skin on the genitals is very thin and contains many blood vessels, making them particularly vulnerable to PFAS exposure, according to a report by Linda Birnbaum, a scientific advisor for Mamavation who previously led the Environmental Protection Agency’s toxicology program.
PFAS are a class of about 15,000 chemicals that are often used to make products water, stain and heat resistant. They are called “forever chemicals” because they do not naturally break down. They are believed to cause cancer, liver problems, thyroid problems, birth defects, kidney disease, reduced immunity and other serious health problems.
PFAS are also considered reproductive toxins and can negatively impact the endocrine system.
These chemicals are likely used in condoms to help latex repel moisture and fluid, the article notes.
Previously at the Olympics distributed 10 thousand napkins.
