A team of archaeologists led by the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) has discovered the purpose of the Pyramid of the Moon in Teotihuacan, an ancient city located 50 kilometers from Mexico City, the modern capital of Mexico. The research was published in the official gazette Web site INAH.
Teotihuacan flourished from 100 to 800 AD. Its population approached 100,000. Its Pyramid of the Moon was one of the largest structures in pre-Columbian America, standing 42 metres high.
The team took numerous measurements to find that the northeastern corner of the Moon pyramid coincides with the position of the Sun rising over the El Sijuingo volcano on the summer solstice.
The researchers also discovered that the southwestern corner of the pyramid coincides with the position of the Sun when it sets behind the mountain on the winter solstice.
The researchers noted that the pyramid’s orientation toward the sun at the solstice affected the orientation of the entire city.
Archaeologists have explained why the pyramid, which takes its name from the Moon, is oriented towards the position of the Sun. According to scientists, this name was given to the structure that has survived to the present day by the Aztecs during the abandonment of Teotihuacan. No one knows how the creators of the Pyramid of the Moon called it.
