Protein traces in the blood can predict the onset of 67 diseases, including cancer and motor neuron disease. These results were achieved as part of a scientific team by scientists from Queen Mary University of London and the Health Institute of Charité University Hospital Berlin. Research results published In the journal Nature.
The study involved volunteers whose data was taken from the scientific archives of the UK Biobank Pharma Proteomics Project (UKB-PPP). This project carried out one of the world’s largest scientific studies of blood biomarkers. Scientists from the UK and Germany studied around 3,000 plasma proteins from more than 40,000 randomly selected UK Biobank participants.
The researchers used advanced analytical techniques to identify a “signature” (expression pattern) of the five to twenty proteins most predictive of each disease. The results showed that changes in the activity of certain blood proteins could signal the development of 67 diseases, including multiple myeloma (a type of blood cancer), non-Hodgkin lymphoma, motor neuron disease, pulmonary fibrosis and dilated cardiomyopathy.
Scientists noted that classical methods of disease diagnosis, based on counting the number of blood cells and measuring the levels of cholesterol and glycosylated hemoglobin, turned out to be less effective than a comprehensive protein analysis. According to the researchers, tracking protein signatures opens up new possibilities for predicting diseases, including rare pathologies.
