Scientists from Dalhousie University (Canada) found that replacing sitting with light to moderate physical activity reduces the risk of developing hypertension in older women. Intense exercise is better for men’s heart health. Research results published In the American Journal of Physiology.
The study involved 30,000 people aged 45 to 85. The volunteers answered questions about their health, physical activity levels, diet, well-being, employment and economic situation. The subjects also underwent a full medical examination and gave blood samples for laboratory tests.
Scientists found that male subjects were more likely to be overweight and suffer from high blood pressure than female volunteers. Regular sedentary time was similar between both groups, but men performed more physical activity at all intensity levels on average. They also found that men were more likely to have a history of angina or have had a heart attack, and women were more likely to have peripheral vascular disease (changes in the vascular wall with the formation of atherosclerotic plaques).
After the data was collected, the participants began a three-year observation period. A follow-up study of the participants’ health showed that reducing sitting time and doing intense exercise helped reduce high blood pressure in both sexes. However, light and moderate exercise was more beneficial for women than men. According to the scientists, such activities had a positive effect on the cardiovascular health of the female volunteers and reduced their risk of developing fragility in old age.
