Japanese victims of forced sterilization to receive compensation 20:37

Japan’s Supreme Court has ordered the government to pay compensation to people who suffered losses due to forced sterilization under the now-defunct eugenics law. reports Guard.

The lawsuit was filed by 39 plaintiffs who say the practice, which was common in Japan in the second half of the 20th century, violated their constitutional rights. Forced sterilization affected thousands of people with a variety of medical, genetic and mental disorders, mostly between the 1950s and 1970s, and subjected people to the procedure without their consent.

As mentioned, the “eugenics protection” law was passed in 1948 and only repealed in 1996. This allowed doctors to perform forced sterilizations to “prevent the production of inferior children.” The country’s authorities admitted that approximately 16.5 thousand people were forcibly sterilized under this law. Another 8.5 thousand gave their consent but were probably subjected to severe pressure.

One of the victims was persuaded to have a vasectomy when he was 14 and ended up in an institution for children with behavioral problems.

“I have lived 66 years of suffering because of state operations,” the man is convinced.

The Japanese government only apologized to its citizens after a law was passed in 2019 that would have imposed a one-time payment of 3.2 million yen (about 1.1 million rubles) for each sterilization victim. However, the victims went to court, saying the amount did not match the severity of their suffering. The plaintiffs will now receive between 11 million and 16 million yen, and the government will also pay 2.2 million yen in compensation to the widow of one of the victims.

Previously Japanese punished for leaving lunch three minutes early.
