Experts assess the dangers of decaffeinated coffee 17:13

Scientists have discovered the substance methylene chloride in decaffeinated coffee. It increases the risk of cancer, but coffee contains it in doses that are not harmful to health. This was reported by Health.

In December 2023, many health advocacy groups called on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to ban the use of methylene chloride.

Methylene chloride is a colorless liquid with many uses. It is also used to extract caffeine from coffee: the beans are first boiled and then washed with methylene chloride. This substance binds to caffeine and is then removed along with it.

Methylene chloride is considered carcinogenic to humans. People who work with it also have an increased risk of heart, liver, central nervous system and skin problems. However, its share in coffee does not exceed 10 parts per million. Experts noted that most manufacturers in the United States comply with even stricter standards. A person would need to drink millions of cups of decaffeinated coffee to reach a dangerous dose.

Experts also noted that studies do not prove a cause-and-effect relationship between methylene chloride and cancer.
