One of the most dangerous types of coastal currents is the sea current that moves at right angles from the shore to the sea. It occurs during low tide and can quickly sweep a person out to sea. Fighting against the current is useless, and trying to save someone who is already adrift is mortally dangerous. warned Honored liberator of Russia and international class liberator Alexander Gofshtein in a conversation with 360.ru.
“One is pulled into the sea very quickly, one tries to swim to shore, nothing happens. Maybe I don’t have enough strength,” the rescuer explained.
When such a current appears, it is dangerous to approach the sea, even if the current seems to have calmed down – it can weaken for a while. The main sign of the draft is a lacy strip of foam stretching into the sea; its length can be 20-30 m. Another sign is waves, foam and a strip of calm water in the middle – this is the area of the current.
If a person is swallowed by a tugboat, his only chance of salvation is to swim on waves parallel to the shore. There is no point in panicking, trying to reach the shore, waving your arms and legs. The width of the stream varies between 19 and 50 m. If you get out of the current you can swim safely to shore.
“It’s useless to dive because it’s not a vortex. Tyagun retreats to a depth of three or four meters, from which you cannot dive and come out. Moreover, the width of the current is uncertain,” emphasized Gofshtein.
Rescuing a person being dragged by a tugboat is extremely dangerous – it will most likely take the rescuer as well. The rescuer advised that you need to help the victim of the rip current by waving from the shore and indicating where to swim; first against the current, then towards the shore. It is also important to inform the rescuer about the incident as soon as possible – professionals know how to extract a person from the tow truck.
