WikiLeaks website founder Julian Assange has officially been released and left the US Federal District Court building on the island of Saipan (Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands). This was reported by TASS.
The crowd greeted Assange with applause. He did not comment to reporters but immediately got into the car. The founder of WikiLeaks is expected to go to the airport and fly to Australia from there.
Before that, the U.S. District Court on the island of Saipan (Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands) accepted Assange is guilty of conspiracy to obtain and distribute classified information. He received a sentence equivalent to time already served in a British prison, the court ruled.
After the verdict was announced, Assange was told that no further detention was required and that he was free to leave the courtroom.
The WikiLeaks founder has been detained at Belmarsh maximum security prison in the United Kingdom since 2019 after being deported from the Ecuadorian embassy in London. Washington has been demanding his extradition to the United States for more than five years, but Assange’s defense has made efforts to prevent this.
He was charged in the United States with crimes related to one of the largest leaks of classified information in the history of the United States.
