Clara Lago and Tamar Novas: “If ‘Clanes’ evokes real events, it’s because it’s well told.”

This much Clara Lago (Madrid, 1990) Tamar Novas (Santiago de Compostela, 1986) started in the world of ‘show business’ at an early age. He won the Goya award for his film ‘Mar Inside’ when he was only 18 years old; Goya became known for his films ‘Compañeros’ and ‘Carol’s Journey’, but his biggest blockbuster came with ‘Eight Basque Surnames’. Now they are starring in Netflix’s new series.clansWhere they live an impossible love story filled with drug trafficking and revenge.

-Aren’t there many shades of Romeo and Juliet in the relationship between your characters Ana and Daniel? Because they both point to their family’s history.

-Tamar Novas: Yes, it has a lot of Shakespearean vibes. There are also echoes of ‘Hamlet’, with a father leaving the task to his son.

-Clara Lago: I think the ‘Romeo and Juliet’ story of warring families is mostly in Nuno Gallego and Marta Costa. [la pareja joven]. In Daniel and Ana’s case, it’s not that love is inappropriate, it’s that it’s counterproductive. The emergence of a love story between these two characters creates a very important conflict of interest for Ana.

-Daniel acts outside the law, but we also see his human side, such as his protective instinct towards his godson.

-Tamar Novas: When I read the script, it fascinated me, because my references as a viewer are very much related to the films of Scorsese, Coppola and series like ‘The Sopranos’ and ‘The Wire’, which talk about an ecosystem. to understand how it works. There are many genres of Narcos. What’s interesting is to see a person outside the law who has principles and values that you can accept.

-The audience can experience the same journey as Ana arrives at a previously decided place.

-Tamar Novas: You come to a place where there are prejudices, information, you know that you are in the world of criminals. First, because they committed a crime against public health. The thing is, it’s not interesting to stay there in a fiction, it’s interesting to see people you’re much more attracted to than you think you are. It happened to me as an actor. They can empathize with these beings who are going through brutal things and choose what they choose because the circumstances they experienced led them there. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t free to choose something else… But that’s what makes it attractive.

-‘Clanes’ is inspired by true events. Is this why the clan is called Padín, like the protected witness of ‘Operation Nécora’?

-Tamar Novas: That’s a question to ask Guerricaechevarría [el creador y guionista]. I think he would make a good drug smuggler because of the way he hid the story. I think Padín is a surname he likes. The series has no real reference.

-Clara Lago: The fact that the series resembles real events is positive because it means that the series is told in a good, believable and realistic way; but that doesn’t mean that this particular story is a ‘biography’ of anyone. After all, Guerricaechevarría did an in-depth research study for just that, so you can see it and doubt whether what he says comes true. Of course, one piece is from one story, one piece is from another story… It is a combination of many true stories. This universe is very well constructed due to all the research work done before.

-The question that constantly comes up in the series is whether love is stronger than the feeling of revenge. Are you clean?

-Clara Lago: Yes, but what is happening in the world is completely different.

-Tamar Novas: What happened is pretty scary. Other types of forces are expected to impose themselves, but what we are experiencing in Gaza in particular can be called terrible revenge.

-Tamar, as a Galician, are you angry that Galicia is so associated with drug trafficking in fiction?

-Tamar Novas: This cliché is one that the series also plays into. I’m from Galicia and they talk to you about drugs or ask you for some mussels, but just like when you live in Madrid they tell you how free you are. It’s great to play with this subject and cliché. I am happy to be able to take part in two series on this subject. [‘Fariña’ y ‘Clanes’]It almost helped me get a master’s degree in drug trafficking.

-This drama also allowed you to use your Galician accent.

-Tamar Novas: It may sound weird, but I feel like I have to do a southern accent. Frankly, it is closer to me and I can do better, but the accent in this series is not my own, which feels natural to me, and the aim was not to imitate anyone. To me, it’s the same game as trying to do something else you’ve worked on before; such as knowing how to pilot or learning to do some activities with your hands.
