Video games improved conditions for multiple sclerosis patients 01:55

American scientists from the State University of New York at Buffalo have discovered that video games are beneficial for adults suffering from multiple sclerosis. The study was published in the scientific journal broadcasting Journal of Cognitive Enhancement (JCE).

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord. It involves an abnormal immune response that attacks the myelin sheath, the protective covering of nerve fibers, leading to inflammation and damage. This disruption of communication within the brain and between the brain and the rest of the body can lead to a wide range of symptoms, including fatigue, weakness, balance and coordination problems, visual disturbances, and cognitive decline.

The study’s authors suggested that cognitive reserve training may help people with multiple sclerosis cope better with the disease. Cognitive reserve is the brain’s ability to adapt and find alternative ways of functioning to compensate for damage.

Scientists have suggested that video games may be a way to improve cognitive reserve.

42 people with multiple sclerosis participated in the survey; The average age of the volunteers was 45 years. Of these, 24 played video games regularly in the last three months.

Further testing showed that people who regularly played video games had better overall cognitive abilities, including executive function (planning and executing actions), short-term memory, visual-spatial, and verbal learning abilities.

These associations persisted even after controlling for age, time since MS onset, and premorbid intelligence level. Additionally, hours spent playing video games have been found to be a better predictor of cognitive performance than some factors traditionally thought to be beneficial to cognitive reserve.
