Scientists found that orange peel extract is good for the heart 28.05.2024, 23:13

Scientists at the University of Florida have found that orange peel extract contains beneficial phytochemicals that may inhibit the activity of gut bacteria that produce heart-damaging compounds. Research results published In Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry (JAFC).

Scientists announced that the activity of some intestinal bacteria contributes to the development of cardiovascular diseases. The fact is that they produce trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO). This organic substance is involved in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and heart failure.

Researchers studying the biochemical properties of orange peel found that orange peel extract is rich in beneficial phytochemicals that help reduce TMAO production in the body. In particular, such properties are demonstrated by a compound called feruloylputrescine. Scientists noted that it was found in water-based extracts.

According to the researchers, their discovery could contribute to the development of new functional foods and drugs that support heart health. In addition, the use of citrus production waste in the medical sector will partially solve the environmental pollution problem.
