A dangerous side effect of drugs that lower blood pressure was found 19:42

Scientists at the University of California, San Francisco found that taking antihypertensive medications increases the risk of developing eczematous dermatitis in older adults. Research results published In JAMA Dermatology.

The study included 561,358 older adults. The scientists collected information about the subjects’ health status and medications they were taking, and then began monitoring the participants. Six years after the start of the study, 6.7% of the volunteers were noted to have developed eczematous dermatitis. This is the most common form of allergic dermatitis, an inflammatory skin disease.

Further analysis showed that the incidence of eczematous dermatitis was higher in people taking antihypertensive medications. They are used to treat hypertension and work by dilating blood vessels, reducing circulating blood volume, reducing cardiac output, or reducing vascular resistance.

The researchers explained that the highest risk of eczematous dermatitis was associated with taking diuretics (diuretics to lower blood pressure) and calcium channel blockers (these drugs dilate peripheral blood vessels). More research is needed to determine the mechanisms underlying this undesirable effect.
