A simple way to maintain bone strength revealed 19:44

Poor quality sleep increases the risk of osteoporosis by causing harmful changes in bone metabolism. Scientists from the University of Colorado came to these conclusions. Research results published In the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism (JCEM).

Scientists announced that bone mineral density in humans reaches its maximum level at the age of 20-25. This source is one of the main factors determining lifetime fracture risk. Once bone density reaches its peak, it remains constant for several decades. Later, when women reach menopause, they experience rapid bone loss. Men also experience a decrease in bone density as they age.

Decreased sleep quality can accelerate bone aging and increase the risk of developing osteoporosis. This was clearly demonstrated in a study conducted in a completely controlled hospital setting. Participants performed their usual tasks, resting and awake for 28 hours instead of the usual 24 hours. This condition was introduced to simulate the stress people experience during night shifts due to disruption of circadian rhythms.

Living in this mode caused the subjects’ bone mineral density to decrease relative to their baseline values. It is noted that significant harmful changes occur in the metabolism of bone tissue in both men and women. In particular, the analysis showed a decrease in markers of bone formation, characterized by the natural and necessary formation of byproducts of activated osteoblasts (bone stem cells).

According to scientists, systematic insufficient sleep can lead to significant bone loss, osteoporosis and an increased risk of fractures. On the contrary, improving the quality of night sleep helps preserve bone strength.

Previously used drugs against cancer turned out to be talented strengthen bones.
