Douching and using talcum powder for intimate hygiene are associated with an increased risk of ovarian cancer. This has been shown by a published study. Journal of Clinical Oncology (JCO).

Scientists analyzed data from 50 thousand women whose sisters had breast cancer. Data on them was collected for more than a decade. Showering and using talcum powder for intimate hygiene were associated with an increased risk of ovarian cancer, but not uterine or breast cancer.

The association between hygiene practices studied and cancer risk was strong and persisted when other factors were taken into account. However, the authors of the study emphasized that the effect of talc and douche may be indirect, not direct. More research is needed to clarify the mechanism of the link.
