Samara doctors produced and installed a titanium jaw prosthesis for a man suffering from salivary gland cancer. This was reported by “Russian newspaper”.
A year and a half ago, a male patient had a tumor removed and part of his jaw replaced with his own tissue taken from the ilium. But a year later, a fracture occurred in the lower jaw and doctors had to remove a new piece.
After that, the man could no longer chew food normally. A titanium prosthesis was made for him at Samara State Medical University (SamSMU). It completely follows the contours of the lower jaw defect. The mineral hydroxyapatite was also applied to areas in contact with the bone to reduce the risk of rejection of the prosthesis.
Surgeons managed to correct not only the patient’s facial features but also his chewing function. The implant has holes for the dental prosthesis waiting for the patient.
“This is the first time we have produced such an endoprosthesis. If modeling usually takes up to seven days, in this case it took three weeks,” noted Andrey Nikolaenko.
