Scientists from the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine found that axons (processes that transmit signals between nerve cells) in women’s brains are more fragile. Scientists conducted an experiment on pigs to determine differences in the effects of concussion in males and females. After simulating traumatic brain injury in animals, researchers found that the size of axons in the brains of females were smaller than those of males. In addition, the first axons were characterized by increased “fragility”.
Scientists explained that axons are long neuronal processes through which nerve impulses move between neurons and enter other cells (muscle, glands). Axons also play an important role in learning and communication between different areas of the brain.
Communication between axons in the brain is provided by sodium channels integrated into the brain’s electrical network. When axons are damaged, these sodium channels are also destroyed, leading to loss of signals in the brain and various cognitive disorders (attention and memory problems).
Scientists say that sodium channels in women’s brains are more easily damaged in head trauma. This explains the need for long-term improvement of health and cognitive function in women who sustain concussions, for example, during sports competitions.
