Name of the products that harm children’s mental health 21:29

Overly processed foods (chips, soda, fast food, chocolate) can put children’s mental health at risk, increasing the risk of obesity, depression and anxiety. About this post Daily Mail said British doctor and nutritionist Michael Mosley.

Ultra-processed foods (UPF) are foods produced in factories or fast food establishments from highly purified ingredients with the addition of emulsifiers, thickeners, and artificial flavors. Often these products contain large amounts of carbohydrates, sugar and fat.

Mosley explained that excessive consumption of such foods can lead to undesirable changes in the gut microbiome. This is the sum of all microbes that live in the organ and ensure its normal functioning – digestion, protection of the immune system, synthesis of necessary vitamins from food.

Some studies have shown that ingredients in overly processed foods and their lack of fiber (healthy plant fibers) can lead to inflammation in the body. In humans, there is a relationship between low-grade chronic inflammation and depression (as well as anxiety) due to the existence of a specialized gut-brain axis.

Additionally, negative changes in the gut microbiome due to the abuse of fast food, baked goods, chips and chocolate can lead to a decrease in the body’s production of natural antidepressants, including serotonin. This factor is also important in the pathogenesis of mental disorders.

Mosley emphasized that children and adolescents are more susceptible to the negative effects of OCD. At a young age, executive function and self-control are not sufficiently developed to reject such foods and avoid developing an addiction to them. Additionally, the gut microbiome is more sensitive during childhood and adolescence.
