It became clear which exercises protect against inflammation in obesity 17:50

Scientists from the University of Copenhagen in Denmark found that aerobic exercise is the most effective strategy for combating obesity-related inflammation. This study showed presented At the European Congress on Obesity (ECO) held in Italy between 12-15 May.

195 Danes and Danish adults (mean age 42 years) with obesity (body mass index 32-43 kg) and no history of diabetes participated in the study. For eight weeks, the subjects followed a low-calorie diet and lost at least 5% of their body weight. Then the participants were divided into three groups.

Volunteers in the first group were asked to perform moderate or high-intensity aerobic exercise for at least 150 and 75 minutes per week, respectively. Participants in the second group used the weight-loss drug liraglutide. The third group was instructed to do their usual exercise routine and also inject themselves with a placebo.

It is stated that the aerobic exercise complex consists of two weekly sessions on exercise bikes. In total, the experiment lasted about a year. Before and after two main phases (low-calorie diet and one-year training), blood samples were taken from the participants to assess the level of inflammation in the body.

Over one year, participants in the liraglutide-only group lost an average of 0.7 kg. Volunteers in the first group gained about two kilos, and subjects in the placebo group gained back about half (6.1 kg) of the weight they lost.

The results also showed that there was a significant decrease in the concentration of IL-6 (interleukin 6) in the bodies of participants who performed aerobic exercise. Chronically high levels of this inflammatory marker (signaling molecule) are associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and insulin resistance.

Scientists calculated that IL-6 levels decreased by an average of 17.3% and 19.9% in the second and first groups. They remained virtually unchanged in the placebo group. There were no significant differences in plasma concentrations of other inflammatory markers (IL-2, IL-8, IL-10, and TNF-α) between all groups.

The researchers emphasized that exercise reduced inflammation more effectively than liraglutide treatment. According to them, you need to train at high and moderate intensity to prevent obesity-related metabolic diseases (such as diabetes).
