Racquet sports may benefit the body and brain health of older adults. The professor talked about it Northeastern University USA Art Kramer.
A study of 80,000 people found that racquet sports were associated with a reduced risk of death from all causes. Another study showed that people who played tennis, table tennis and badminton lived longer than cyclists, football players, runners and swimmers. When players were compared to sedentary people, badminton was found to extend life by an average of 6.2 years and tennis by 9.7 years.
The expert stated that these studies cannot prove a cause-effect relationship between racquet sports and life expectancy. One possible explanation for its benefits is that any activity is good for the heart and therefore the brain. These games also include social interaction, which is good for the mind. However, it is also possible that the impact of racquet sports is indirect. People who play them may be healthier to begin with.
The doctor concluded that any type of physical activity is good for health. Among racquet sports, older adults can enjoy pickleball, which combines elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis. It does not require excessive activity and therefore represents a compromise option in terms of activity and risk of injury.
