Eating an avocado every day can help you reduce your sodium intake and consume more healthy fats. This was reported by Health.
Avocados are rich in healthy fats and antioxidants, but due to their high fat and calorie content, some avoid avocados for fear of gaining weight. A six-month trial of 1,008 people with abdominal obesity showed that this fear was probably unfounded.
Participants were divided into two groups: One ate an avocado every day, while the second group was asked to limit consumption of this fruit to twice a month. Otherwise, they ate as usual without restrictions. The first group was also given avocado-based recipes and presentation ideas.
After eating avocados for six months, the subjects’ diets became more consistent with healthy eating habits: They began consuming more vegetables and healthy fats, and they also reduced the amount of unhealthy fat, sugar, sodium and refined grains. However, there was no significant change in the subjects’ weight. This means that consuming avocados does not increase or decrease weight or belly fat.
Scientists believe the subjects may have preferred fresh avocado instead of adding high-sodium ketchup to the burger. Or they might have chosen an avocado smoothie for breakfast instead of a bowl of refined cereal.
The results mean that eating an avocado every day will not harm your health or body shape and can improve the quality of your diet. Scientists suggested using avocado puree as a sandwich sauce, adding it to salad dressings and making chocolate desserts.
