Sommelier debunks six main beer myths 03:00

Russian craft beer is one of the best, and dark beer is mistakenly considered the most bitter. Sommelier and retail expert Anna Trifonova stated this in an interview with socialbites.ca, debunking the main myths about beer.

The first myth, according to him, is that craft beer in Russia is worse than European beer.

“Craft beer in the Russian Federation surpasses the entire European market in terms of ingredient quality. There are 26 types of hops registered in our country. In the storage facility of the Chuvash Republic, 250 varieties from all over the world are frozen, malt (barley) is one of the best in the world. “Unlike wines, which we will never reach the level of French regions, our beer has been leading blind beer tastings for the last 6 years,” he explained.

The second misconception is that craft beer has no style.

“It is craft beer, lager, ale, porter, stout, barleywine brewed according to a basic recipe (style). Deviations made by the author of the brewing in the form of additives and spices are acceptable, but not at the expense of technology,” added the sommelier.

It is also a myth that beer with a short shelf life is better and tastier than pasteurized beer (with a long shelf life).

“Live beer is dirty. It is made in breweries where airborne bacteria and germs are introduced when poured into kegs and bottles. To prevent this from happening, the company must be sterile, which is only possible on an industrial scale. The quality and taste of beer stored for a long time is better,” said the expert.

The fourth myth says that powdered beer is cheaper than pasteurized or live beer, but this is also a misconception.

“The main ingredient of powdered beer is hops dried in fractions.
To prepare the drink, you will need not only water, but also malt (and this is the most expensive element of the beer chain). If we consider the economics of the foam, it turns out that it is more profitable to purchase products in their original packaging,” said Trifonova.

The sommelier also debunked the myth that hop products are something to be feared by simply looking for the word “hops” on the beer label.

“First of all, hops give bitterness to the drink. It does not matter whether the hops are granulated, obtained from cones or extract. “This does not spoil the taste of the beer,” he said.

Finally, the sixth myth is that dark beer is the bitterest.

“The main difference between dark beer and light beer is malt and hops. For dark beers, malt is roasted to form a caramel-like crust that adds sweetness to the beer. “In addition, the denser and darker the beer, the less hops are felt, which gives bitterness to the drink,” concluded the expert.
