A new and dangerous consequence of childhood obesity has been identified 04/11/2024, 22:25

Scientists from the University of Leeds (UK) found that overweight or obese children and teenagers have a significantly higher risk of iron deficiency. This condition has a negative impact on attention, concentration and memory, and can also increase the risk of developing conditions such as autism and ADHD. results published In BMJ (British Medical Journal) Global Health.

During the research, scientists analyzed thousands of existing scientific articles on the relationship between obesity and iron deficiency in the body. Participants of the studies included in the meta-analysis were children and people under the age of 25 from different countries.

It was revealed that the risk of developing iron deficiency anemia is significantly increased in obese and overweight children and teenagers. This is a pathological condition characterized by a decrease in iron levels in the body, leading to a decrease in the concentration of red blood cells and hemoglobin in the blood. Iron deficiency can cause increased fatigue and decreased memory and concentration. It is also stated that anemia in children is a provocateur of autism and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).

According to scientists, iron deficiency in the body of obese children may be caused by malnutrition. It can be caused by a diet rich in “empty” calories, especially from fast food, and consumption of sweets, chips and sugary drinks. Such foods contain a lot of fat and carbohydrates, but little useful nutrients, including iron.

Previously was named An important drug that can slow the obesity epidemic.
