Scientists from Ohio University James Cancer Hospital in the USA said that breathing naturally occurring colorless radioactive radon gas can trigger the development of lung cancer. At the same time, public awareness of this risk factor is extremely low. Research results published On the Ohio State University (OSU) Medical Center website.
During the study, researchers conducted a survey among 1,006 U.S. residents ages 18 and older. Participants were asked to report what they knew about cancer risk factors. The researchers were particularly interested in people’s awareness of the harmful effects of radon, a naturally occurring, colorless gas.
Radon is formed during the natural radioactive decay of uranium, which is found in all rocks and soils. It can be released from building materials and found in water. Radon concentrations are generally higher in basements, cellars, and living spaces that come into contact with soil. According to scientists, radon exposure is responsible for 15-20% of lung cancer cases diagnosed in people aged 40-50.
Survey results showed that 75% of respondents had never assessed radon concentrations in their homes. Moreover, more than half (55%) are not concerned about the potentially dangerous presence of this gas in schools and other public spaces.
Scientists added that it is necessary to introduce new bills that require assessment of airborne radon levels in schools, residences and workplaces. Such measures will help reduce the incidence of lung cancer among U.S. residents.
Previously I learnedb radon exposure may increase the risk of stroke in women.
